Boylston was first settled in 1706. In 1743, the initial petition to incorporate was denied by the British Colonial Governor. Boylston was eventually incorporated in 1786. Boylston was named for Ward Nicholas Boylston, a wealthy and philanthropist of the late 18th century. He was a benefactor of both the Boylston and the church, bequeathing money in his will for the Boylston town hall.
