Clients Benefit from Ralph’s Senior Care Devotion

Two years before Ralph Geck became a CAREGiver at Home Instead Senior Care® of Las Cruces, he gave of himself because he saw a need that no one else could meet.

Ralph quit his job and moved in with his father-in-law, who was 98 years old and drifting away mentally because of the ravages of dementia. A melted coffee thermos on his father-in-law’s stove was the impetus for Ralph, who told his wife that he’d devote himself to her father 24/7 to make sure he was safe. “We were determined never to let him set foot in a nursing home,” Ralph said, “and he didn’t. He needed someone all the time for safety reasons. Previously we had prepared his meals, took them over and helped him when he needed it. But I knew the time had come to stay with him at night, too.”

Florencio H. Hernandez Sr. died peacefully at his Mesilla home at age 100 on Jan. 10, 2005, with Ralph, his wife and other family members nearby. “He was a tough, old cowboy from Fort Davis, Texas. I loved taking care of him. I had no regrets,” Ralph said. “He didn’t know who I was in the final year of his life, but it didn’t matter to me.”

Personal care, including bathing and toileting; meal preparation; companionship; errands and housekeeping – how did Ralph manage all that? Where did he learn? “I did what I had to do. My instincts kicked in. I figured things out as I went along. I knew I had to do it,” Ralph said.

A little more than three months after his father-in-law died, Ralph went to work for Home Instead Senior Care. Asked if he felt as if he was destined to work with seniors at the franchise owned by Jan and Ron Wimsatt, Ralph said, “Yes, perhaps so. I don’t know what words to use to tell you how much I like my job. It is rewarding, but it is rewarding in different ways with each client.”

Some people have asked him, “Why do you do it? Isn’t it hard?” Ralph replies, “Sometimes it is stressful, but it is still rewarding because I am helping someone who really needs the help. The Lord has blessed me and my wife in different ways, and I think this is a way to give back.”

Asked how he is received as a CAREGiver, Ralph said: “For the most part, the clients appreciate me. When you are with the client for the first time, you can see it in their eyes even if they don’t come out and say it, ‘You seem nice and all of that, but can you really help me?’ After a day or two with them, they know I can. I consider myself a people person because I like working with people, period – young and old. I smile automatically no matter what. If I smile, the clients will smile back. I put the Golden Rule into practice.”

There is little doubt where Ralph stands with his Home Instead bosses, because they honored him as the CAREGiver of the Month. Jan leads Ralph’s fan club, saying: “Ralph is always aware of and strives for what is best for the clients, their families and the Home Instead reputation.  He often calls to review certain aspects of his clients’ care and makes sure the client care coordinator knows what is going on with the client.  He is a very caring and giving man – he has real CAREGiver DNA.”

Client Care Director Faith Lester said: “Ralph is the kind CAREGiver who asks questions. His questions are thoughtful and have an element of common sense in them. He is proactive in that he takes in a caregiving situation, evaluates it and seeks the next step. Will his client need further help in a certain area?  What kind of obstacle might present itself?  He is the kind of CAREGiver who likes being prepared just in case a situation might arise.” 

Staffing Manager Anne Marie pointed out that Ralph is not only an exceptional man but an exceptional CAREGiver. “Ralph definitely lives our company credo, ‘To us, it’s personal.’ He is giving, respectful, responsible, compassionate, loving, professional and reliable,” Anne said. “The fact that Ralph is a part of our Home Instead team instills a sense of confidence that there is someone out there in the community providing our seniors with the care they need. He represents Home Instead Senior Care very well.” 

Client Care Manager Dona Martinez saw Ralph in action when she was a CAREGiver. “I had the pleasure of working with Ralph. Not only is he a great CAREGiver, but Ralph is also a great team player. He works hard to ensure that all the needs of the client are met and is great at communicating with other CAREGivers who are coming in to work. He communicates well with the office staff, too. Any time you see him, he always has a smile. Thanks, Ralph, for all your exemplary work.”

Ralph’s clients are more than happy to put in a good word for him, including one who said: “Ralph is a good CAREGiver. He is a self-thinker, conscientious and doesn’t have to be told how to do everything. He is always very punctual.” 

Another client agreed that Ralph is punctual and conscientious, and also added: “He is thorough, considerate and patient. He doesn’t just sit around. I enjoy having him around and feel comfortable and safe with Ralph. He has a level of confidence.”
