Katie ‘Fulfilled, Grounded’ as a CAREGiver

Katie Brennan’s incredibly burgeoning résumé has one more line: Award-winning CAREGiver at Home Instead Senior Care® of Las Cruces. With that line come descriptions such as “compassionate, patient, amazing, proactive, intuitive, pleasant and positive.”

Folks outside the Home Instead Senior Care realm address Katie as Dr. Brennan. In addition to working for Home Instead, Katie is Professor of Double Reeds, Music Theory and Ear Training at New Mexico State University.  With Home Instead clients and their family members, the accomplished musician is simply known as “Katie.”

“Being a CAREGiver grounds me and gives balance to my life; it is fulfilling,” said Katie, who moved from Michigan to Las Cruces in May 2013 and became a CAREGiver on June 20, 2013. “I like helping seniors. It is a part-time job – about 10 hours a week – because of the other things that I do, but I appreciate the flexibility that Home Instead Senior Care affords me.

“I have had as many as four or five clients at one time, and perhaps a dozen overall, since I started with Home Instead. But I now have two regular clients. Both have dementia; nothing is ever the same for each trip to help them. I like to hear their stories. It is educational to me, and I like to make them feel comfortable by listening to them.”

The CAREGiver of the Month has made quite an impact in her short time with the 18-year-old franchise that is owned by Jan and Ron Wimsatt.

From Client Care Manager Dona Martinez: “Katie is very proactive. She is always positive and communicates with her clients very well.”

From Staff Manager Ann Marie Vasquez: “Katie is an amazing CAREGiver, and I believe that she does this because she truly enjoys it.  Katie is a professor at New Mexico State University for music, and she chooses to stay with Home Instead.  She is a very proactive CAREGiver and cares about her clients; Katie communicates well with the office.”

From Client Care Director Faith Lester: “Katie has the ability to be ‘who’ and ‘what’ a client needs. When I introduced Katie for the first time to a client, Katie tuned into her and was able to give our client an amazing companion who intuitively knew how to make a difference in her life. Katie has been able to make those kinds of connections with all of her clients. Caregiving is an avocation, and Katie has made it her avocation.”

From one of her clients: “Katie is wonderful and good to work with. She is always so pleasant and easy to be around.”

From Katie’s other client: “Katie is very caring and foresees things that need to be done before I have to mention them to her. She has a very pleasant personality, and she is easy to get along with. I really appreciate the fact that Katie has filled in for a shift that was short notice. She is quiet when needed, but she can also hold a great conversation.”

Companionship is a big part of a CAREGiver’s job, but Katie said Home Instead Senior Care training is good and always available if a refresher is ever needed. “I reviewed training dealing with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s,” she said, “and it was good to do so.”

When she took one of her client’s to a doctor’s appointment, Katie – who had been given the OK to meet with the doctor and chat with him – talked with the doctor and was given helpful nonmedical methods that would assist the client better and enhance her care.

“I also like the fact that the office trusts a CAREGiver’s judgment and acts quickly on recommendations whenever they come up,” she said. “I called our staff to check out a situation that had become difficult for both the client and his wife. The client had gotten to the point where he needed more help than Home Instead could offer. His loving wife was trying so hard to help him, but we had to make a judgment call that related to their safety. We always have the client and family foremost in our thoughts and actions.”
