When my brothers and I were small, Mom and Dad couldn't afford fancy hotel vacations. Instead, they'd pile us into the station wagon for camping trips. Packed into the back seat with our pillows and games, the three of us squirmed our way across Ontario, begging for birch beer and Smarties until Dad would give in and stop. No matter how bored we thought we were, Dad's enthusiasm always won us over and made each trip fun.

Somehow, Mom and Dad saved enough money to buy an old bungalow fixer-upper in Ottawa. They were so happy and proud. Together, they stripped wallpaper, fixed plumbing and refinished floors, turning a run-down house into our home. When I was nine, Mom put a paintbrush in my hand so I could help, too. My little brothers were so jealous!
