Most summers, Uncle Mike joined our family on vacation. Together, we fished on St. Joe River, visited Shoshone Falls and explored Yellowstone. A true teacher at heart, Uncle Mike sparked my interest in geology as he explained that Mammoth Cave is actually a lava tube, and how the Shoshone ice caves were formed millions of years ago.

Changing Roles

I owe a lot to Uncle Mike. He urged me to attend college and study geology -- a traditionally male field. It was difficult, but my uncle was always there to encourage me. Since Aunt Barbara died, I've wished I lived closer, so I could be there for him, like he was for me. We still talk and laugh on the phone, but it's obvious he's forgetful and getting confused at times. I worry that he's not eating properly and he might forget to take his medications.
