Marion couple's franchise offers non-medical care to seniors
What type of work does your business do?
JIM SAMUELSON: We provide quality non-medical assistance for seniors. We help our clients live an independent lifestyle wherever they call home. Our services include companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, shopping, laundry and medication reminders. These services are provided by our great team of trained CAREGivers who are screened, bonded and insured. All are part-time employees of our company.
How long have you been working in Marion County and how did you get your start?
SAMUELSON: We moved from Baltimore to Ocala 1 1/2 years ago in order to start our business. I have 30 years of contract office furniture business experience and Mary has 30 years teaching experience.
What opportunities do you see in Marion County's business community?
SAMUELSON: We see tremendous opportunity for growth in Marion County. There is a growing need for the type of services we provide. With the influx of retirees into our community, the needs will only increase over time.
What is the biggest challenge in doing business here?
SAMUELSON: Establishing a reputation for providing exceptional service takes time and effort. Our focus has been placed on responsiveness, reliability as well as hiring and training an exceptional team of CAREGivers.
How is your line of work changing and how do you keep up with industry trends?
SAMUELSON: The overall number of seniors continues to increase. This places more demands on families, the medical system and the community. Home Instead Senior Care provides our company with an incredible amount of information and support in order to keep up with the changing needs of seniors as well as the latest industry information.
What is a good source for new ideas?
SAMUELSON: Professional organizations like the National Private Duty Association help provide us with new and different ideas which help
us to better meet the needs our clients.
Who is your mentor?
SAMUELSON: Our parents who taught us the value of integrity, working hard and getting involved in order to make a difference in the lives of people.
SAMUELSON: Since we are working so many hours each and every day, an appliance that would prepare and serve us a complete dinner at the end of the day would be wonderful. Cleaning up afterwards would be an added benefit.
What is your favorite business book?
SAMUELSON: The Bible. It is the rule and guide for everything we say and do. Also, Tom Hopkins' classic "How to Master the Art of Selling."
What do like to do away from work?
SAMUELSON: We participate in and support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Team in Training program. This program trains ordinary people to complete an endurance athletic event while raising funds for the Society.
What piece of advice do you have for someone starting out in business in Marion County?
SAMUELSON: Don't stand on the sidelines. Join and get involved with local business and civic groups. We are members of and are active in the Ocala/Marion County Chamber of Commerce, Ocala Business Leaders and the Ocala Rotary
