A Tradition of Great Caregiving

At Home Instead Senior Care, we reward our local CAREGivers with CAREGiver of the Month and CAREGiver of the Year awards to show our appreciation for all they do. Home Instead, Inc. also recognizes regional CAREGivers of the Year and one special CAREGiver who shows exceptional dedication is the recipient of the national award — The Mary Steibel CAREGiverSM of the Year Award.

This program inspires CAREGivers to strive for excellence. It creates a sense of pride in the fact that the Home Instead Senior CareSM franchise network recognizes, appreciates and rewards their hard work, compassionate care and service to others.

Meet 2012 Local CAREGiver of the Year - Ed Shaw

From owner Jeanne McCusker
Ed was in the air force for 30 years and also an associate pastor. When Ed walks into a room he exudes the confidence of his military background, the warmth of his pastoral background, and a smile that can light up any room. His life experience makes him an amazing caregiver both personally and professionally. Ed’s interactions with clients create a mutual level of respect because he is able to meet his dementia clients where they are that moment in time. He actively engages his clients to improve their quality of life by encouraging them to do as much as they can for themselves while also allowing them to maintain their dignity. As with his own family he knows how critical it is to show caring support the spouse and family members. His clients' families see him a crucial part of their family care team.

From a client’s wife
“Ed has been a marvelous caregiver for my husband who has short term memory loss. Dick truly lights up when he knows that Ed is visiting! Ed’s strength and gentleness in both his physical administrations and attitudes toward my husband has been phenomenal. Ed is always thinking of ways to keep him occupied whether physically or mentally. Patiently listening to the same story over and over, then asking questions over and over as if for the first time.”

From a client’s daughter
“Whenever Ed is with Dad, the whole family is at ease. Ed's competency, sensitivity, and sincerity are so reassuring. Ed's friendly, gentle manner with not only Dad, but everyone he comes into contact with, puts everyone at ease- he is never hurried. He allows Dad to find his own way if he can in a situation, but will offer assistance gently if needed. All the Home Instead caregivers are very friendly and understanding, but Ed has a quiet fortitude and ability to set Dad at ease. Some of this is accomplished through the respect Ed shows his fellow man. He will draw Dad out both mentally and physically. He knows how to ask Dad questions he is comfortable and capable of answering, such as about his childhood or his war-time experience. He knows how much space to allow Dad, showing his trust of his ability to do certain things like walking a certain distance by himself. I have learned from Ed's gentle coaxing how I can sometimes address my father in a way he will be more receptive to a certain situation. I am one of four children who assist with my parents, but we all work full time. Ed has been a remarkable presence in my parents’ lives through all his graciousness. I just wish Ed could be cloned - the world would be so much better.

Meet the CAREGivers of the Month

Nancy Via

Nancy Via - February 2013

Nancy has been with us for almost three years and has logged more than 2,500 hours with clients. She is one of those CAREGivers that just quietly goes about her work, always reliable, always on time, and one of the first to complete training requirements.

She has achieved the Silver and Gold levels of the Career Ladder and is anxious to start on Platinum. Her Santrax score is always a 10! This dependability makes our lives easier in the office and is a great source of comfort to her clients. Families and clients trust her quiet confidence.

In the words of one daughter: “Nancy is a very caring, kind, compassionate, intelligent person. She not only takes fantastic care of my mother, but she has fun with her.” Also the grandson of one of our clients said that his family could not have asked for a better CAREGiver. What great endorsements!
Marquita Thomas

Marquita Thomas - January 2013

Although Marquita is quite new to us, she has made a great first impression. The majority of her time with us has been with a Hospice client and we know she made a huge difference in the last few months of this person’s life. The family called to say Marquita was "fantastic." The daughter-in-law, who is a nurse, described her as a “gem” and said she stood out in her experiences with caregivers.

During bad weather recently, Marquita was not comfortable driving but asked for our help getting her to work. We gladly obliged and appreciated the fact that she was taking the initiative to get to work instead of wanting an easy out. She got behind on her training because of her full-time schedule with her client, but once that schedule freed up she immediately called the office to get back on track with her training.

Marquita exemplifies a Home Instead CAREGiver: she builds trust with her reliability, she takes the lead with her initiative and she shares her heart with her devotion to her clients.

Thanks, Marquita, for representing us so well!
Anna Tyree

Anna Tyree - September 2012

Anna was one of the first CAREGivers we hired when we opened our doors in 2003. In January she will celebrate nine years with us!

This is her second award for CAREGiver of the Month. Anna has worked with many clients over the years on both a short-term and long-term basis. In September several of the clients she had helped short-term called the office requesting her to return. That speaks volumes for the level of care she is providing them. Anna is current with all her training requirements and does a great job with clocking in and out using Santrax.

Thanks, Anna. We look forward to many more years of your wonderful caregiving!
Tracey Creasy

Tracey Creasy - August 2012

Tracy celebrates her two year anniversary with us this September and she is definitely deserving of this award. Over the past two years she has helped a number of clients and they all have loved her. She is one of our most requested CAREGivers. She keeps her commitments to us and recently accepted a last minute assignment with her usual willingness and cheerfulness. Despite working a full-time job she has somehow managed to stay current with all her training. Her ever-present smile and positive attitude make her a joy to work with.

Thanks, Tracy, for all you do and for representing Home Instead Senior Care so well.
Ed Shaw

Ed Shaw - July 2012

When Ed joined Home Instead Senior Care in April of last year he immediately impressed us with his professionalism, compassion and dependability. Both his family caregiving responsibilities and his military background prepared him for the standards of care for which we are known. In training classes he shares valuable insights with other CAREGivers so all can benefit from his experiences. He always keeps the staff informed on matters concerning his client and his schedule and always returns calls in a timely manner.

In addition to all this, Ed has recently agreed to help us conduct Family Caregiver Workshops in the community. His knowledge and experience with Alzheimer’s disease, along with his public speaking skills, will be a tremendous asset in reaching families struggling with this caregiving challenge. We are fortunate to have him as part of our team.

Thanks, Ed, for doing such a great job and making a difference to so many!

Bobbie Smith

CAREGiver of the Year 2012

Bobbie Smith heard destiny calling when she was just a child. Those days, she was helping her grandparents care for the sick and the elderly, and Bobbie was touched with a God-inspired mission to serve others. Her grandfather identified her special qualities when she was assisting the ill and dying in their Mississippi home. "My grandfather said he was proud of me because some adults could not do the work that I was doing. He said God had ordained me to do this," Bobbie noted. Do your job well, he said. It might just be the way you make a living.
