I’m a caregiver employed with Home Instead Senior Care in Downey for six years now.  It is one on one communication at the office which is very good.  The schedules- they work with you and understand.  I’m also a CNA with another company and with my experience I can figure out different situations on limited information.

I enjoy caregiving.  It’s like having grandparents I never had.  To make a senior happy, keeping them safe and make their daily living comfortable is what I like to do.

Growing up with my sister born with Down Syndrome, my family and I took care of her until her last days.  She showed me how to care, protect and understand and that is why I am a caregiver today.

Caregiving became very personal to me when I took care of my mom, who became an amputee because of diabetes.  After she passed away, I gained the experience and desire to work as a caregiver.  The five years that I have worked as a caregiver with Home Instead Senior Care have mellowed the teacher personality and temperament in me.  I have become more patient, more compassionate, kinder and gentler.

I believe my life has been enriched by caregiving because I have worked for different women with varied backgrounds and professions.  They share their lives with me and we learn to respect each other.  In the past, I have worked for a few clients privately and also for some other companies, but it’s different with Home Instead Senior Care.  They not only care for their clients, but for their caregivers as well.

I’ve been with Home Instead Senior Care for over four years now and have enjoyed my time here.  I’ve been care-giving since 1995 when I began helping an elderly lady I met while square dancing.  She was instrumental in getting me here at Home Instead Senior Care.  I helped her clean her home, do crafts and lots of other things and everything I did with her I did without any pay.  I did it because I cared about her and out of the goodness of my heart.  She recognized my “gift” and on her last day she gave me a phone number to call to help me get a job doing caregiving.  I called the number and it was Home Instead Senior Care and I’ll always be grateful to her.

I enjoy the companionship with my clients and doing things with them and for them, the friendships and many of them I have come to love dearly.  I have lived away from my parents for many years and both of them are passed away now so many of these clients are like my parents to me.

People say I have a gift for caring for the seniors, a gift that only could come from God, because I always seem to have something to say to keep each situation moving forward in a positive direction.
