Meet the Owners
Michael and Laura Bousman started Home Instead Senior Care in Virginia Beach in 2003. Since then, they have helped thousands of seniors in the Hampton Roads area remain at home in a safe and loving environment with well trained experienced CAREGivers. Before opening Home Instead Senior Care, Michael attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then Wake Forest University Medical School. With his career in Neurosurgery, Orthopedic surgery and Geriatric rehabilitation medicine, Michael saw first hand the great need of seniors being discharged from the hospital with the only option being to a nursing home. Laura attended the State University of New York at Buffalo where she received a degree in Health and Human Services with a geriatric specialty. She worked in Nursing and Rehabilitation centers in New York and North Carolina where she put her passion and knowledge to work helping seniors and family members cope with Alzheimer’s and other long-term illnesses. Michael and Laura met in Charlotte, North Carolina working together to help a senior with discharge planning. Together, they realized the great need seniors have wanting to stay in their homes. Realizing their calling to help, Michael and Laura moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia to help seniors remain in their homes.
Michael’s passion for helping seniors came from values that his parents and grandparents taught him as a child. With a strong belief in family and a desire to help those in need, Michael spent countless hours with Nanny, his grandmother, baking and preparing meals for people in their community who were elderly or recovering from an illness. Years later, this desire to help seniors would culminate in Michael specializing in geriatric rehabilitative medicine. Physicians would refer older patients to Michael because of this passion for seniors. Laura’s strong desire for helping seniors began as a child. Her grandmother lived next door and Laura would spend many afternoons with her baking fresh cookies and talking about life experiences. Her grandmother taught her kindness and compassion for others. Later in life, this love of seniors, would result in Laura facilitating Alzheimer’s support groups, and being a liaison between Rehabilitation Centers and hospitals. Laura now sponsors and directs the annual “Be a Santa to a Senior” community event, providing thousands of needed gifts for seniors without family in the South Hampton Roads area.
