Janet Barrows, Owner

It was while working for a not-for-profit agency that concentrated on elder issues that Janet became passionate about helping seniors "Stay Put" in the familiar surroundings of their homes.  In 2002 Janet opened a franchise office of Home Instead Senior Care in Bloomington, Indiana where she has been happily helping local seniors "Stay Put" in their homes ever since.  In 2004 Janet received the Greater Bloomington Chamber Business Person of the Year award.  She is active in her community where she is a Rotarian and a graduate of Bloomington Monroe County Leadership.  She also serves on the Board of the Bloomington Greater Chamber and is a past board member of Leadership Bloomington and the Local Council of Women.

Shani Hessenthaler, Recruitment & Retention Coordinator

Shani joined our team in September of 2008 as the Recruitment and Retention Assistant. She joined us from Illinois and really enjoys the Bloomington community. Shani was born and raised in Idaho and was married in July of 2007. She is currently finishing her Bachelors in Family Life Studies from Utah State University. She has a long history with management teams and is excited to be assisting our CAREGivers with training and employment. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, craft projects, shopping, and cooking.

Kayla Anderson, Account Specialist

Kayla joined our team in July of 2008 as the Administrative Assistant, and is now in charge of our client billing as the Account Specialist. She was born and raised in Michigan and moved to Indiana in 2001. She attended Olivet Nazarene University for coursework in Sociology. Kayla was married in June of 2007. In her free time she enjoys reading, baking, scrapbooking and spending time with her family. Before joining our team she worked in medical offices as an Optometric Tech and a Chiropractic Therapeutic Assistant. Her Grandmother had dementia, so helping people that suffer from the disease is something she is very passionate about. She really enjoys working for a company that helps to make a difference in people's lives.

Laurie Braley, Staffing Coordinator

Laurie joined our team in November of 2008 as our Staffing Coordinator. Wanting to leave the "Big City" she moved to Bloomfield from Chicago with her husband of 20 years and their 16 year old daughter. In Chicago, Laurie was a Senior Customer Service Representative for a medical review company. In her spare time she enjoys reading and spending time with her family.

Sue Eastwood, Staffing Coordinator

Sue was added to the Staffing Team in February 2011.  She moved to Bloomington, IN from San Diego, CA in 1993 and continued working in education while her children were young.  She moved into healthcare, and spent twelve years focusing on scheduling and provider/patient relationships.  In her free time, she enjoys being with family, playing music, cooking, gardening and long hikes with her dog, Chance.

Karen Gunderman, Client Care Coordinator

Karen joined our team in March of 2009. She most recently came from The Olcott Center at Bloomington Hospital and Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. She is originally from Indianapolis. She's been married for 20 years to Tim, they have 5 cats. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, cooking, scrapbooking, painting, gardening, reading, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. Her fondest memories are of summers spent with her grandparents, listening to their stories and working in the rose garden.

Michelle Sims, RN Client Care Coordinator

Michelle Sims joined Home Instead Senior Care as a RN, Client Care Coordinator.  Michelle is a graduate of Indiana University School of Nursing and holds an RN, BSN.  She has many years of both hospital and private physician practice experience.  Michelle has been a MCCSC volunteer and is a member of several local philanthropic women's clubs.  She, along with Karen Gunderman who is also a Client Care Coordinator, will provide case management and quality assurance visits as well as doctor visits with all clients and screening for changes in health.

Janell Smith, CAREGiver & Personal Care Trainer

Janell joined Home Instead Senior Care in October of 2006 as a Caregiver. She previously worked at Stone Belt Arc as an Employment Support Consultant and taught at Richland Bean-Blossom Community Schools for 7 years. She graduated from Whitworth College (before it was a University) with a BS in Education and from Indiana Wesleyan with a MA in Education. She has recently begun teaching Personal Care classes. In her free time she enjoys the out-of-doors, playing with her dog, and making people smile.
