Mac & Susan Johnson, Co-Owners
Co-owners Mac and Susan have been leading the Home Instead Senior Care team in Santa Barbara County since 2002. Actively involved in the Santa Barbara community, the Johnsons understand the unique needs of their clients and families. As part of the world’s largest network of independently-owned providers of care for seniors at home, Mac and Susan remain committed to helping older adults improve their quality of life in an environment of support and safety. With parents back in the Midwest, Mac and Susan have a unique understanding of caring for aging parents some distance away. Add to that six children and seven grandchildren, and Mac and Susan stay busy hosting a revolving door of family visitors. When not at work, you’ll often find Mac in the kitchen and Susan deep into her recent book selection.

Influenced by her grandparents’ dedication to community service, Melissa spent many summers volunteering at area nursing homes where she learned to listen and understand the specific needs of seniors. Melissa has also gained valuable insight into how growing older could and should look from her Grandma Lovinger (now age 96). Melissa applied this experience to Home Instead Senior Care in 2006, working part time as a CAREGiver. Combing her passion for serving the needs of seniors with her business acumen Melissa now serves as the Agency Director at Home Instead Senior Care. Melissa was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where she attended John Carroll University and graduated with a degree in Philosophy and Psychology. She has lived on the West Coast since 2003 and is actively involved in the community, volunteering for several area non-profits. Melissa is on the Board of Directors for Catholic Charities, where she sits on the Technology and Mistletoe Ball committees.   Anastasia R. Johnson, Care Coordinator
Anastasia has worked with Home Instead Senior Care since 2009. Relationships that enhance the lives of all involved are a motivating factor in her life; so, one of the favorite aspects of her job is matching CAREGivers and Clients. Anastasia moved to Santa Barbara in 2007 after 26 years in Colorado where she raised two boys and is now watching her eldest son and his wife raise two beautiful children of their own. Always an active member of the community, Anastasia has been involved in Hospice, the Rape Crisis Center and the Birds of Prey education project for children/schools. She has also volunteered for the Environmental Defense Center, the Channel Keepers and Save the Gaviota Coast. In her spare time, Anastasia enjoys paddle boarding, reading, writing and dancing. Currently, Anastasia is working on Biographies of Seniors, a written legacy of our seniors’ histories.   Jennifer Barthell, Care Coordinator
An Orange County native, Jennifer moved to Santa Maria when she was six years old. After earning her Associates Degree in Liberal Studies from Allan Hancock College, Jennifer joined Home Instead Senior Care in 2008. Jennifer is an active member of Element Christian Church, serving on the Events Committee. Matching CAREGivers and clients is a role for which Jennifer is uniquely qualified. She has taken annual trips to Arizona to provide care for her grandmother with advanced Alzheimer’s and respite care for her grandfather. In addition to spending time with her husband, Jonathan, and their Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Simon, Jennifer also spends every Sunday with her extended family in Santa Maria, Included in their family gatherings each week is her uncle with special needs who resides in an area group home. Reading, baking, watching the Food Network, decorating and planning parties keep Jennifer busy in her spare time.   Pamela Carmichael, On-Call Supervisor
Pam began working with Home Instead Senior Care in 2005 as a CAREGiver and continues her work in that capacity. With her many years of front-line experience, in 2008 she took over as the On-Call Supervisor handling emergency calls from CAREGivers and Clients after-hours. Pam was born in Clovis, California and grew up in Santa Maria, California. She worked as a pharmacy clerk for eighteen years prior to joining Home Instead Senior Care. Pam is married with two children and is active with her daughter’s water polo team and as a room mother. Her hobbies include gardening, refinishing furniture and movies.   Jean Perry, Administrative Assistant
Jean joined Home Instead Senior Care as a CAREGiver in 2004, and has since transitioned into working in the office. Service became a reoccurring thread in Jean’s life, beginning as a “Candystiper” as a teenager. After her children began school, she worked as a nurse’s aide at Cottage Hospital while studying to become a Licensed Vocational Nurse. While working in the Cottage Operating Room, she went back to school and received her Associate Degree in Nursing. Jean worked in 11 different specialties, including as a member of the open-heart surgery team at Stanford University Hospital in Palo Alto, California. In her spare time she became an Amateur Radio Operator “Ham,” and worked as the radio contact for teams of physicians who were working in Central America performing surgeries and procedures. Jean’s interests outside of work include church activities, Ballroom dancing, singing, piano, ceramics, woodworking and making jewelry. |
