Home Instead Senior Care's Operation Medicine Cabinet™ Protects Seniors and Our Community Water Resources by Safely Disposing of Old Medicines

Home Instead Senior Care, in partnership with the San Marcos Police Department and the City of San Marcos Public Services Department, has scheduled Operation Medicine CabinetTM for Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM to help San Marcos residents safely dispose of expired or no longer used prescription and over-the-counter medications.  The "drive-up and drop-off" event will be held at the San Marcos Police Department drop-off location located at 2300 S. IH-35.

San Marcos residents or their family caregivers can simply drive up to the location where officers will be on hand to oversee the drop-off of medications into secure containers. After the event all medications will be properly disposed of by the Police Department. Representatives from the Public Services Department will be on hand to provide information and answer any questions.

The program addresses several major community concerns including protecting seniors and others from accidentally using expired medications and preventing potentially hazardous chemicals from contaminating our community water resources.

"Operation Medicine Cabinet™ is a valuable community service that educates the public on how proper disposal not only protects loved ones from accidental ingestion, but also helps protect the environment," said Carolyn Casey, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care agency that serves San Marcos.

"Residents often flush unwanted medications down the toilet or drain, but the local waste water treatment system was not designed to remove these types of contaminants from our water resources. In addition, kids, pets and local wildlife can access medications that are carelessly thrown away in the trash," said Casey.

"The San Marcos Police Department is excited to partner with Home Instead Senior Care to bring Operation Medicine Cabinet™ to our community", said San Marcos Police Commander Terry Nichols.  "This is a win-win event for not only our citizens, but our environment as well," said Nichols.
