Saskatoon Shines and our elders who worked to build such a promising city deserve excellent care as they age.  While Saskatoon is known as a young city (average age 35) we are home to a high percentage of seniors, with 12.5% over age 65.

The two mile radius around our office at Market Mall, the Nutana Suburban Centre, has the highest concentration of seniors per capita in all of Canada.  Approximately 9000 Saskatoon residents are over the age of 80 and many in this age group are in need of assistance.   

Home Instead Senior Care is the world leader in non-medical home care for seniors.  Bringing the research and resources of this company to families and professionals in Saskatoon is a pleasure for us.  We’ve met hundreds of senior care partners in the city – social workers, nurses, facility and case managers as well as volunteers within various agencies.  We are all working together to make our city a place to age with grace.  Saskatoon Shines and with good care our seniors will be honored in that good light.

Market Mall is our office home. We are pleased to work with the Betty Ann Fisher, mall administrator, who kindly accommodates our many activities in the mall.  Check out Market Mall amenities here:  www.saskatoonmarketmall.com.

Be A Santa To A Senior is our community outreach to underprivileged seniors. We work with several senior facilities in Saskatoon who supply the names of lonely isolated seniors who would not receive a Christmas gift otherwise. We enlist the public to purchase gifts and recruit volunteers to wrap and deliver the gifts in person. Many Saskatoon businesses and organizations help make this happen. The Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan is dedicated to helping those affected by Alzheimer's disease through awareness, advocacy, education and support services. Are you aware that 50% or 85 year olds will have alzheimers? Read the report  Rising Tide. The Alzheimer Society is our company’s key fund raising focus throughout the year with ‘Coffee Break’ fundraising and the ‘Forget Me Not Walk’ in January.

The Saskatoon Council on Aging  has two main functions: operating a Resource Walk-in Centre to enhance the quality of life for older adults, and working with local agencies to initiate, implement, and evaluate projects useful to older adults in our community.  The SCOA Resource Directory is a valuable resource for seniors in Saskatoon.

We support the SCOA CAREGiver forums by speaking and or supplying complementary caregiving service to families who require care during the forum. Contact Meaghan@scoa.ca if you are in need of this service. We also participate in the SCOA event, Spotlight on Seniors every October.
