Be a Santa to a Senior

Wrapping Party 2010.

Each year the Be a Santa to a Senior campaign spreads holiday cheer to seniors living in HRM who are either financially challenged or lonely and may not have family or friends to share the holidays with.

Home Instead Senior Care, with the help of local non-profit and community organizations, identifies seniors that may not receive gifts during the holiday season. Partnering with local businesses and retail stores, we then facilitate the purchase and distribution of gifts. Ornaments are placed on holiday trees within their various locations detailing specific gift requests. The general public can select one or more ornaments, purchase the gift(s) requested, and spread cheer to a senior in need.

Here’s how it works…

1. Locate the nearest participating local business or retail store. Visit http://www.beasantatoasenior.com  to find out where.
2. Select an ornament off the designated Be a Santa to a Senior tree.
3. Purchase the gift requested on the ornament.
4. Ensure a store employee receives the unwrapped gift after purchase.

In December of 2010 the Be a Santa to a Senior campaign was extremely successful. Over 1000 gifts were distributed to nursing homes, assisted living facilities, low-income housing, meals on wheels, senior’s centres, senior’s buildings and hospitals throughout HRM.

A Special thank you goes out to Walmart, The Berkeley, Mayor Peter Kelly and Home Instead Senior Care CAREGivers for devoting their time and resources to this program.  Wal-Mart allowed us to use their prime retail floor space to hold our Be a Santa to a Senior holiday trees. In addition to this, Walmart graciously donated 8 pre-lit holiday trees, tape, scissors, and a pickup truck full of wrapping paper.

The Berkeley locations throughout HRM loved the idea of putting trees up at their locations. This way, residents could help other, less fortunate, seniors by purchasing gifts. The Berkeley staff even took the residents out shopping so they could pick-up gifts. Mayor, Peter Kelly, eagerly agreed to lend us his support by attending our kick-off and wrapping parties.

Are you interested in volunteering during the next holiday season? We are always in need of volunteers to attend our wrapping party. This is a full day event where thousands of gifts are wrapped in time for delivery, a few days before Christmas. Please call our office at 429-2273 or e-mail halifax@homeinstead.com for more information.

Nova Scotia Walk for Memories

Each Spring Home Instead Senior Care recruits staff, caregivers, friends and family to participate in the Nova Scotia Walk for Memories presented by Shannex.  The purpose is to create awareness and raise funds for programs and services that support people who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.

This walk takes place at the Halifax Commons and is an opportunity for fun, exercise and reflection. The Home Instead Senior Care team walks for all families in Nova Scotia living with Alzheimer’s disease, with a special focus on the clients we serve who are affected by the disease. The event brings people together to enjoy music, food, activities and lots of giveaways! In 2011 we walked on a hazy day but, the rain held off long enough to make it an enjoyable day for all who participated. Thank you to all who walked with the Home Instead Senior Care team!
