Questions to ask a
home care company
BEFORE you hire them!
Ask the following four important questions and make sure all of the items are covered to protect yourself.
1. Are each of your care providers required to pass an extensive multi-year background check before they are hired?
WARNING: Most agencies say they perform background checks. To be on the safe side, find out how thorough of a background check they are doing. The agency you choose should be doing an extensive multi-state, (if they have lived in another state), multi-year background check, (performed by a private company).
2. Are each of your care providers bondable?
WARNING: Some agencies say that they are bonded and insured when, in reality, only the owners/managers/company are covered by an umbrella policy.
3. Are your care providers covered under Worker's Compensation?
WARNING: Homeowners Insurance policies do not cover injury to 'domestic' care which is how in-home care providers are classified. YOU or your loved one, the homeowner, is assuming substantial and/or devastating risk if the independent contractor injures themselves while on your property.
4. Are your care providers employees of the agency?
WARNING: When using registries, independent contractors and individuals YOU become the employer and therefore responsible for employer forms, taxes, and employees taxes if they don't pay them.
Keep yourself and your loved ones safe.
