James and I (Debra) grew up in Upstate NY. We were very close to our grandparents whom were involved in every facet of our lives. From babysitting and attending all school functions including school sports to band competitions, vacations and driving us to and from school. We both moved away from home after graduating from college.

As we grew older so did our grandparents. Little by little grandma began taking care of grandpa. It progressed to the point where grandma's health was becoming an issue due to the strain and responsibilities of caring for grandpa. This is when we both stepped in and spent alternate weekends with our grandparents. We would grocery shop, run errands, vacuum and dust the house, answer questions regarding their mail and stay by grandpa's side to make sure he did not fall. We also helped with their laundry and helped take care of their dog Jollie. My grandparents were grateful for the help they received around the house, but what they enjoyed most and what we saw was most beneficial was the companionship they received from us. We were there to talk to them, to play cards with them, to watch TV with them, to learn how to knit and hear about their pasts. "Just" sitting on the porch with them drinking a cup of coffee and watching the cars drive by put a smile on their face. We were able to keep both our grandparents in their home living together for longer than we originally thought was possible.

As time moved forward grandpa's Alzheimer's disease progressed to a stage where he needed nursing care and my brother and I advanced our education. After receiving our undergraduate degrees we both moved forward and each received our Master's Degree in Long Term Care Administration. And yes, we BOTH also became licensed Nursing Home Administrators. We both worked as administrators for 5 years prior to moving to Florida. We have dedicated our entire careers in serving the aging population.

What motivated our move to Florida? Our parents retired and were moving here. We began our careers with Home Instead Senior Care one month prior to our parents arrival.
