Based Upon a Strong Belief in Elder Well-being
From Cathy Murphy, Owner
It all started with a crisis in my family that has a plotline familiar to many. As my parents began to show signs of aging, they continued to be fiercely independent until there was a major issue: both became critically ill at the same time. My siblings and I were jolted from the roles of adult children into being caregivers for our parents. We had no idea what to do or where to go. Ultimately, we navigated the waters and established good care in safe environments for both parents, but the experience was traumatizing. It awakened me to the need not only for elder care but also for support around the adult children who are caring for their parents.
That experience resulted in my decision to enter this field. Over the next year, I researched a variety of businesses and settled on Home Instead Senior Care because it made use of the skills I had developed through many years as a business executive, and it gave me the opportunity to deal directly with adult children who have been affected. It has always been my mission to bring peace of mind not only to our clients but also to their families and friends. I know this peace of mind comes from a confidence in the quality of care the seniors in their lives are receiving, and that they know and trust the people who are providing that care.
Over the past 10 years our company has grown from one employee (me) to a full-time staff of eight and more 100 CAREGivers who also are our employees. CAREGivers are screened, bonded, insured, trained and supervised by our staff. We take tremendous pride in the care we give to our employees and, therefore, the care we deliver to our clients. Striving toward continual improvement has enabled us to cultivate a community of professionals we are confident in.
We believe in a relationship-first approach, and our entire business is built on this. I have found those relationships to be the most satisfying aspect of owning and operating Home Instead Senior Care.
Home Instead Senior Care Began from Personal Experience
Paul and Lori Hogan founded Home Instead, Inc. and began serving seniors in Omaha, Neb., as Home Instead Senior Care in 1994. It was Paul Hogan's own family experience caring for his grandmother that made him realize the need for non-medical home care and elder companionship services to help seniors live independently at home.
Fulfilling a Growing Need as Our Population Ages
In June 1995, the company began franchising. By 1998, Home Instead Senior Care had grown to 99 offices and was recognized by Entrepreneur magazine as one of the 100 fastest growing franchise companies in the United States. In 2000, Home Instead Senior Care began international development with the opening of an international partner relationship in Osaka, Japan with Duskin Corporation.
