ABOUT THE AID & ATTENDANCE PENSION BENEFIT

The Aid & Attendance pension Benefit is a provision of the VA disability Program through the U.S. Veteran's Administration.

Wartime veterans and their surviving spouses with limited incomes, who are totally and permanently disabled for reasons not traceable to their service, may be eligible to receive compensation under the NCS (non-service connected) VA disability program.

SERVICE ELIGIBILITY

The veteran must have served 90 days or more of active duty with at least 1 day during a stated period of wartime. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard are eligible. Merchant Marines (non Great Lakes), Air Transport Command contracted airline civilian employees, Wake Island defenders from Guam or were civilian employees of Pacific naval air bases and civilian personnel assigned to OSS secret intelligence may also be eligible. National Guard are not eligible unless called to active duty (90 days). Qualifying time of service: WWII (12/7/41 - 12/31/46); Korea (6/27/50 - 1/31/55); Vietnam (8/5/64 - 5/7/75).

MEDICAL QUALIFICATION

Claimant has a medically documented diagnosis or condition (dementia, Alzheimer's severe arthritis, Parkinson's, diabetes, stroke, paralysis, osteoporosis, blindness, etc.) that requires regular assistance with their ADLs & IADLs - dressing, bathing, grooming, meal preparation, housekeeping, laundry, transfer from chair or bed, incontinence, medication management, assistance with ambulation (cane, crutches, walker, wheelchair). They must have a physician report that stipulates that they need assistance with their ADLs to maintain a quality of life and the aid and attendance of another to protect them from the hazards or dangers incident to their daily environment without which the veteran would require hospital, nursing home or other institutional care.

FINANCIAL ELIGIBILITY

Contact us for current information regarding asset and income limitations and qualifying expenses to offset gross income.

PENSION TIDBITS

  • Staying in compliance is CRITICAL. If a veteran loses the pension they cannot get it back.
  • Spending $.01 less than the pension on the contracted cost of home care without adequate qualified un-reimbursed expenses will result in the veteran being out of compliance on the pension.
