Activities of Daily Living - A Definition

Medical and social work professionals will sometimes refer to ADLs and IADLs when discussing an individual's care needs. ADLs and IADLs are tasks of daily living. It is important for the individual to be involved in performing these tasks, to the degree of their capabilities, for as long as possible.

Our trained CAREGivers are educated on how, when and to what level they should assist our clients with these tasks. However, our CAREGivers are also cautioned that doing TOO MUCH for the client may create "excess disabilities" that could prevent the client from being able to complete these tasks for themselves in the future. Our goal is to assist the client while maximizing their self-esteem, maintaining a sense of self-worth and avoiding the creation of excess disabilities.

ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) are essential tasks of daily life. ADL s include activities such as:

  • Eating & drinking
  • Dressing & bathing
  • Toileting & continence
  • Walking & transferring
  • Hygiene & groomingLI>

INSTRUMENTAL ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) are basic daily tasks that are NOT essential to survival, but which a person should be able to do in order to function independently. IADL s include:

  • Meal preparation & clean-up
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry
  • Shopping
  • Using the phone
  • Driving or taking public transportation
