Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs

Description of resource: Elder Affairs directs services to approximately 41,000 elders through the state funded Home Care Program, administers social and nutrition services under the Older Americans Act and fulfills advocacy, planning and policy functions on behalf of the 1.1 million elders of the Commonwealth.

The Executive Office of Elder Affairs is responsible for the development and management of comprehensive community based programs that help to ensure the dignity and independence of elderly persons. Elder Affairs provides state and federally funded services to frail elders, the disabled and family caregivers. Service delivery is coordinated through a network of 27 Aging Services Access Points and 348 Councils on Aging.

The Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging and Senior Center Directors, is a non-profit membership organization comprised of municipal Councils on Aging.   Their mission is to support the independence of adults 60 and older by advocating for programs and services to meet their needs, promote the growth and quality of Councils on Aging and senior centers and strengthen the professional skills of Council on Aging staff.
Services include: meals, volunteer opportunities, transportation, socialization, activities and education. The goal of the council is to maintain independence allowing the senior to remain at home within their communities.

Professional Geriatric Care Managers (GCMs) are specialists who assist older people and their families in designing plans for the elder which maximize independence and well being.

The National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers (GCM) defines and promotes the highest standards of private practice. Membership is open to qualified individuals either with a degree in a field of human services (social work, psychology, nursing, gerontology) or an equivalent background, who also are experienced in the delivery of services to the elderly and their families. Members of The New England Chapter of GCM must meet or exceed the standards of the National Association.
