Operation Medicine Cabinet
Operation Medicine Cabinet was a success! We collected 164 pounds of outdated and unused pharmeceuticals at Worthington Square Shopping Mall on October 18th. The Franklin County Sheriff's Department handled the medicines and securely moved them to their incinerator where they were destroyed. Chief Steve Martin told us that they would become less than a handful of ashes. That is 164 pounds saved from our water supply and landfills.
Every person who walked or drove up to our command unit thanked us profusely for having the event. Many had large containers full of things that they did not know how to destroy. In the bag we passed out with information about Home Instead Senior Care and other services for seniors we included directions from www.smarxtdisposal.net, for home disposal. The instructions will let you know how to properly eliminate pharmaceuticals in your home.
We want to thank the Franklin County Sheriff's Department, the Worthington Police Department and Worthington Square Shopping Mall for supporting our efforts and making the event possible. We also thank the locations which allowed us to display our informational posters, and especially Channel 4 news which let people know to come that morning! We plan to hold similar events twice a year. Please watch for the dates and sites.
Be A Santa To A Senior
We are currently engaged in our BE A SANTA TO A SENIOR program. We have organized this event over the last 4 years in Franklin and Delaware counties. BASTAS matches up seniors who may be alone and without gifts during the holiday with generous people who fill their wishes. We are partnering with the Franklin County Taskforce on Aging. Local agencies and residences give us the names of seniors and their wishes for the holidays. These are written on paper ornaments which are then hung on trees located in CVS and Walgreen's stores, in independent living facilities, and in churches. An ornament is chosen and the gift purchased ($25 or under) and returned to the site of the tree. The gifts are collected and then wrapped for the recipeints who receive them before the holiday. This year we have received over 600 requests.
You can participate by going to www.beasantatoasenior.com to learn more and to find the locations of the trees. You can also help by contibuting money or wrapping paper or by joining us at our WRAPPING PARTIES on December 10 and 11 anytime from 10am-6pm at 3220 Riverside Dr, suite B1. Call us for details, 614-486-6643.
