House Parties and the Modern 1960s Woman

People always thought Aunt Betty was my mother, and I was delighted to be compared to this fashionable, fun-loving woman. Her career woman's life as a stewardess seemed so sophisticated, with her new house in the new Portland suburb of Bridlemile. Neighborhood house parties were sure to include conversation about the opening of the Music Box Theatre, construction of Memorial Coliseum or the brand new Portland Buckaroos hockey team. We kids hung, entranced, at the top of the stairs listening for every detail, while the adults talked and danced to Bobby Darin and the Everly Brothers in the basement rumpus room.

Golf Lessons and Life Lessons

Overnight visits to Aunt Betty's were always exciting. She belonged to the Portland Golf Club and we felt so grown up, sipping our Shirley Temples and eating shrimp cocktails in the clubhouse. She gave me my first golf lesson and I've been playing ever since. Her encouragement and influence also helped me become the first college grad in the family.

Dealing with Change

Because she's been like a second mom to me, I visit Aunt Betty as often as I can. She's still as vibrant as can be in mind and spirit, but some physical challenges are making daily activities harder for her. It's very important to her to keep her home and her independent outlook, and it breaks my heart that I can't be there every day.

Help Her Remain Independent With Home Instead Senior Care®

When family members or friends aren't able to help the older adults they love, Home Instead CAREGiversSM can. With a network of locations across Portland, and worldwide, Home Instead Senior Care is all about taking care of older family members long-term in the homes they've enjoyed and treasured. We provide a range of services including companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, shopping, errands--everything you'd do for your loved one, and more--to give you peace of mind, whether you live several states away or in the next county.

Inspired by a Personal Experience

It was Paul and Lori Hogan's own personal experience caring for their 100-year-old grandmother in her home that inspired them to launch Home Instead Senior Care in 1994. They realized many families had the same need for non-medical in-home care and elder companionship that could help seniors live independently at home. The demand for these important services has been so great, that the company's network now has 800 locally owned franchises across North America and around the globe.

Reliable, Dependable Services Around-the-Clock

Our responsible, experienced CAREGivers are members of the local community, familiar with the resources available in your area of Oregon. Home Instead Senior Care services are available 24/7, every day of the year, including holidays, and are delivered by trusted CAREGivers who are screened, bonded and insured employees--never independent contractors.
